- My first internet journal entry was made in August 1998 at the age of 17 (and two months). Just a tender wee thing, discussing the rage behind an accidental pregnancy.
- The only consistent action in my life has been the act of writing.
- It is sort of an odd feeling, knowing that the internet community has watched me while I have grown up. Prior to the advances of the BBS and internet forums, only family, friends, and a small local community was privy to the average non-famous person\’s growth.
- My web site receives hits from Saudi Arabia. Women must be covered in Saudi Arabia, and yet there is someone in that country watching me expose myself to the world through the internet.
- Supposedly the internet was going to become the great equalizer. As yet, it remains full of power plays, sexism, political heirarchies, corporate sponsorship, and NGO domination. And of course, you can still only plug in if you have the financial means and an electrical power source (at least on occasion).
- I forget, all too easily, about how very specialized the internet is. The majority of flesh and blood still have no idea what the verb \”Google\” means (\”I Googled it\”), let alone the meaning of \”It\’s on my del.icio.us feed.\” Try saying that at a non-geek party and see what kind of response you get — it\’s priceless.
- As important as I find things like the potential of the internet to equalize (or at least allow a greater understanding for others) via folksonomies, I still have problems getting my head around the problem that despite Google going public and experimental toys like Blogshares, the content is still all virtual, and therefore, without access to a feed, worthless. How much reliance on technology is too much?
- Despite the desire of the total disconnect of my mind from my body that I often long for due to having chronic pain and other health problems, I really fear the day when society reaches a point where it is more than just a handful of extremist Transhumanists and other geeks who want to leave the physical body in order to be permanently wired into a virtual world. Interesting (at least for their times) media that have approached this subject, off the top of my head: \”Strange Days\” (movie), \”Serial Experiments Lain\” (anime), \”Snowcrash\” (book), \”Shadowrun\” (RPG), \”Neuromancer\” (book), \”Transmetropolitan\” (graphic novel), etc.
- I\’m in the wrong line of work. As much as I generally appreciate design, aesthetics, graphics (or lack thereof), pictures, etc., I really fucking hate the tediousness of making them.
- The last few weeks have been an ongoing battle: Drupal vs Nucleus. Nucleus is harder to learn the insides of, and therefore my instinct is to use it. Drupal, on the other hand, offers more options. Both being fully non-profit, GPL licensed software, are shit ass impossible to get coherent data on. Navigating their sites is akin to dumping yourself in the middle of Manhattan directly after your eyes have been gauged out, then being told to find your way to Staten Island… except you can\’t take the ferry. Oh, joy of joys! Geeks just love making it difficult for us Luddites to make our way around their world. Don\’t tell me there is no power with knowledge because it can\’t exist in an open source, commons driven environment. As soon as I decide the lesser of the two evils, my shit be outta here.
