The big deal Society for Neuroscience conference is in town here in DC this weekend and most of next week. Busy like a bee, I am. The SfN is the world\’s largest and most recognized organization for all things related to neuroscience and the brain. Hence, the people from Dr Maude\’s lab in Australia are here, and thousands of other geeks from all over the world. 50,000 more geeks in this town than usual. Which, (aside from poster presentations on the latest experimentation in neurodegeneration) means one thing, and one thing alone: Casual Encounters on DC\’s Craig\’s List is hopping much more than usual. One fool even explicitly titled his ad frisky neuroscientist looking… he can only possibly be looking for trouble giving out that sort of information. I can\’t be the only person reading CE who is also attending SfN.
Kinky scientists with their one-night stands. You\’d think scientists who study things like TJI, dementia, Bi Polar, HIV, and other sorts of things might make better decisions, but no. Once again, it\’s the fucked up leading the fucked up — it\’s just that they are the ones who happened to go through the ten years of schooling and student debt in order to get into scientific research and development.
Dr Maude is paranoid that this year\’s conference is going to be crawling in bird flu, which saves me the trouble of spreading some disease around.
Oh, and the Dalai Lama is blessing us all with a talk on the scientific benefits of meditation. How special. That means security is tight like the White House and there are more metal detectors than there are down at City Hall.
Bah. Just call me Ms Scrooge.
